One of CONE's most important undertakings is monitoring the actions of the Niagara Escarpment Commission (NEC) and how their decisions agree with the purpose of the Niagara Escarpment Plan (NEP). CONE has been the leading non-governmental organization to champion the effective and responsible implementation of the NEP. As a tireless defender of the Escarpment’s natural heritage, CONE advocates that development on the Escarpment be true to the spirit and letter of the Niagara Escarpment Plan. CONE also plays an innovative leadership role in influencing and improving government decisions on water, aggregate, transportation, and other sustainability issues.

CONE attends all NEC meetings to monitor their decisions and performance. In addition, CONE presents research and policy recommendations to the NEC on issues related to Escarpment protection. CONE also actively participates in the 5-year reviews of the Niagara Escarpment Plan to ensure the interests of its members are heard and reflected in any plan amendments.
